In any business it is often required for those that wish to be successful to challenge the status quo, or in other words go against what is known to be reliable company practices. This carries great risk to any that dare to challenge the status quo in such a manner. Those that are already well-established in a company do not wish to admit that their ways are outdated and will quite often seek to undermine those that challenge the norms in such a way. If done right however such a challenge can yield great success and create further innovation that can promote new growth and even create new industry standards. There are several ways to go about challenging the status quo in a successful manner and create a successful business from almost nothing.
1) Be resolute in your decision, even if others back out.
All businesses must change continually to remain relevant in their given industries. If you happen to find something that makes sense despite the misgivings of others then have the courage to stand up for your decision, even if it seems the least popular choice at first. Perseverance is a large part of what makes any business successful.
2) Know when to question authority
This is not a call for a revolution, but instead a useful piece of advice when management seeks to squash any ideas contrary to their own that might affect change. Change is needed, it is required to stay relevant, but you must also know when to make your voice known and when to remain firm in your own convictions.
3) Any good business model must allow for debate and experimentation
If there is no conflict within a business on any given day then the business has stagnated and is no longer growing. Experimenting with new methods and techniques is important to put any business on the fast track to growth and eventual success.
4) Never lose the ambition to succeed
Hire those with the same passion and drive. The beginning of any business is the drive and the willpower to go through with an idea. In order to really challenge the status quo you will need to keep that competitive fire and seek out like-minded individuals that are willing to share and stimulate that same passion.
The need to challenge existing business techniques and proven methods is a requirement for growth and for true innovation. In order to create new and innovative ideas, sometimes the status quo must be forced to stand up and pay attention. By doing this a business can continue to compete. Without it, most businesses will eventually be left behind by their competition.
